Live Music Showcase: Elmo Balderdash
This week in Dublin we have the most amazing line-up of live artists, several of which I get to host (yay!), so be expecting plenty from me in the next few days!
On Tuesday, the Blarney Stone AND Fibber Magees was graced with the presence of one of Second Life’s most experienced and arguably finest live musicians, the Virginia-based Elmo Balderdash. Elmo is well-known throughout SL for more than just his live performances; I would wager that just about every live musician on the grid owns at least one of his scripted instruments. He has been performing in SL and in RL for several years and has been involved in the live music scene in Dublin for some time; however it has been a while since Elmo last performed in Dublin and certainly the first time this writer has seen him play live.

I mentioned before that Elmo managed to perform at both of Dublin’s live music venues, didn’t I? Well, Elmo’s set was for sure an action-packed one, as the dematerialization of Dublin 1 half-way through meant that we had to move to Dublin 3 and continue the gig in Fibber Magees. Not that you would have noticed. Not losing a beat, Elmo played on and utterly impressed me with his faultless professionalism, which in a world in which the venue around you can disappear at the drop of a hat is really saying something!
Professionalism is a very good word to describe Elmo Balderdash. This man played his way through a great variety of classics and acoustic, all with an unwavering and cheerful confidence and an innate ability to entertain his audience. Some of the favourites he performed at this gig included U2’s ‘All I Want Is You’, the Moody Blues’ ‘Nights In White Satin’ and ‘All My Loving’ originally by the Beatles, and folk traditionals such as ‘Black Velvet Band’ and ‘Mist-covered Mountains’. My personal favourite was his reindition of ‘No Myth (Someone To Dance With)’, originally by Michael Penn, an unfamiliar song to me, but to my ears, Elmo’s best of the gig.

Elmo entertains a packed pub
If you want to be entertained in SL, you really cannot go wrong with Elmo. A must-see, and really a performer you have to see before you can truly call yourself a fan of live music in SL.
