Live Music Showcase: Zachariah Loon

I am firing these posts off like crazy this week, huh? Well, we have had an absolute wealth of talented live musicians in Dublin recently. An IM from an excited Cher this afternoon alerted me to the fact that I was in for a very special treat today; during the first of today’s live music showcases at the Blarney Stone, an artist was performing for the first time in Dublin – the inimitable Zachariah Loon.

From the moment Zachariah (or Zach) began to perform, I realised that this was to be a very good set. He has an incredibly smooth and seasoned voice which grabs your attention; you know immediately that here is someone worth listening to. Zach has been writing, playing and singing his own songs since a young age, and there is a lot of personality and individuality to his music. Hailing from Oklahoma, Zach’s topics are as down-to-earth and honest as his playing style. While he sings about his first car, lost love, beer and Oklahoma life, he also (rather candidly) regales his audience with tales from the girl-chasing days of his youth. A high point of the show was when he told the very funny tale of the waitress from the Girly Pancake House, while continuing to play his guitar – at the same time. A guy who can truly multi-task!

Covering quite a range of genres during his set, Zach moved from street blues and country style songs (including the very impressive instrumental entitled ‘Fabulous Riverboat’) to the more upbeat rock ‘n’ roll ‘Daddy’s New Ride’, which found an extremely appreciative and swelling crowd in the Blarney Stone; at one point 45 strong. Overall, this was a very professional show in which the standard never dropped; original songs, a beautiful voice, smooth guitar and wonderful showmanship – Zach has the full package. Definitely a Second Life artist to watch!
