Live Music Showcase: Lyn Carlberg
As anyone who frequents the Dublin sims will know, Dublin is one of the best places in Second Life to come if you’re a big fan of live music. During the week there are, on average, nine live music events per week in Dublin and its sister sim San Diego combined, as well as simulcast events on various days of the week. Literally hundreds of the cream of SL live musicians have graced the stages of Fibber Magees and the Blarney Stone, thanks to the love and dedication of the lovely Cher Harrington and the Dublin team of live music hosts and hostesses.
I regularly host live music events in Dublin. Week in and week out I attend live music gig after gig – you’d think that after a while I would get restless and bored with the idea, right? Wrong! I love live music in SL. I firmly believe that live music is the glue which holds Second Life together. Every time I discover a new artist, it is a real treat. It often doesn’t feel like a job to host these amazing musicians, whom bring such a variety of musical influences to the stage of our beloved venues in Dublin. I don’t think that these artists get the exposure or credit they deserve for the time they give to share their music (which, let’s be honest, they could be doing in RL for a much better return). So, I’ve decided to write in here about some of the artists I’ve seen in my job as hostess.

Lyn Carlberg at the Blarney Stone
The first of which is the fabulous Lyn Carlberg, whom I had the pleasure of security hosting for yesterday morning. Lyn is an acoustic folk solo artist from Wales, who’s repertoire stretches from classic traditional folk songs to more contemporary music. Lyn has what I would call a highly intuitive ability to pick and choose the songs he will perform that suit his guitar playing style and voice; both of which are soothing, pleasant to listen to and uniquely his own.
Lyn is quite entertaining in a lot of ways, and not just musically; the very cute Ydrys the dragon was a suitably patriotic and amusing take on a tip jar. I’ll admit I’m biased in liking this guy, given all the songs Lyn performed yesterday were firmly in that little selection of music that I’m most fond of. The cherry on the cake was his willingness to take requests from a list on his MySpace website (found here), by which we were graced with a beautiful reindition of Eva Cassidy’s Autumn Leaves; one of my all-time most favourite songs (and rather seasonal!).

Lyn wows the crowd
Aside from Autumn Leaves, Lyn performed a lovely selection including Waltzing Matilda, Black Is The Colour (another of my all-time favourites), Blooming Heather, No Frontiers, and several others, all effortlessly delivered. Lyn interspersed his singing with background information about the music and the songs, which was a nice touch that I felt shows a true dedication (I didn’t know, but was intruiged to find, that Autumn Leaves was originally a French song!). Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, and if you have not experienced Lyn Carlberg live, I highly recommend you visit his website or join his SL group for information on when he is playing!
