Welcome to your Second Life…

I am rubbish at writing ‘really good’ first posts; but, unfortunately, they have to be made *shudders*. So let’s get this one out of the way, shall we?

I’m Riko, and this is my blog about Second Life. I’m not entirely sure what I will write about here, but I was struck with the need to have a blog about SL, as it’s something which I believe wholeheartedly in and think will change the world. One of the first things that comes to my mind is this. People who’ve never seen SL or really experienced it may think I’m sad. Go ahead. You know what? I don’t care. I’m not a sad person; I have my problems the same as anyone else, but I don’t think the fact that I use and enjoy SL makes me a weirdo or a nerd. Neither are my friends; SL has its (probably more than) fair share of weirdos, but it also has some inspirational builders, designers, musicians; an absolute plethora of talented people who have realised the sheer potential there is in a world in which you can change everything from a blade of grass to the position of the sun in the sky.

This is freedom; you can play your computer game, or you can take Mario, Aragorn, Lara Croft or even your lemmings to a thousand different worlds.

This is creativity; you can watch a film and marvel at the special effects, the costumes and the multi-million-pound sets, or you can make them yourself for nothing.

This is immersion; you can watch your television and stare at what other people have chosen for you to see, or you can be it.

If you’ve never seen Second Life and/or think it’s sad, here’s a challenge for you: give it a go, before you scoff. Sign on to SL, make your avatar, get stuck in, explore – spend a few months; discover what SL really is. Then come back and tell me I’m wrong.
